What guests are saying about the Hotel Lucia Portland

We stayed three nights. The start was not perfect - we had confirmed a king bed but were given a queen, and were told there would be an adjustment (but it never happened, not even on check out when I reminded them). Other than that, the Lucia is a great hotel. The rooms are not large (by chain motel standards), but they are well appointed, and are very clean and each is equipped with a modern TV and two phones (one in the bathroom). Wake-up service is good, with a second reminder call. The front desk staff is remarkable for local suggestions. We asked for restaurant recommendations and got suggestions - along with detailed reasons to support those recommendations. And, we discovered that the recommendations were right on the money when it came to describing the restaurants and the food. We tried two of them and loved them both (see separate reviews for Andina and for Caffe Allora both in Portland). There is a bar off the lobby, a sitting area with a gas fireplace and an exercise room and a small business center one floor down. The room key provides free access to all and to the elevator. The key access to the elevator is a nice safety feather. Apples seemed to be continuously available and when we departed a bit before 6 AM, we were given bottle of water. The hotel is filled with interesting photographs by David Hume Kennedy.

I stayed here a couple of years ago now but it seems more recent on reflection. having seen the Lucia come up in a top ten list I had to add my comments.

A company I was visiting recommended the Lucia or the Ace - preferring a more traditional and comfortable style I opted for the Lucia. On the trip up from OC airport I sat next to another traveller on his way to Portland, also for the first time, for a convention and he was booked into the Ace. We shared a cab into Portland and went our seperate ways after exchanging email addresses.

The Lucia was great - staff at check-in greeted me warmly, the room was superb, in-room dining was better than expected and bed very comfortable to the point where I crashed after eating and woke up 8 hours later, perfectly rested albeit a little too early!

However, on checking my email I learnt that my new found travel companion had emailed me twice in the night and had tried to transfer to the Lucia. I apparently made the right choice - it was, unknown to me, the Portland Gay Pride weekend and the "Queens Dunk Tank" was right outside his hotel and under his bedroom window. I think I had the better view but on reflection if that was what you wanted to see it may well have been the best.

Lucia is located within easy walking distance of the best of downtown Portland. Staff courteous and professional. Rooms are a touch small, but with so much do to in the area, why stay in your room?

my husband and i live just over the river in northeast Portland. we desperately needed a staycation away from our children. we decided to stay the night at Hotel Lucia for valentines day & my husband 39th birthday. such a nightmare. the room appeared like it had not been dusted in weeks but we tried to brush that aside. we grabbed take out and decided to camp out in our room for this evening around 6. a few hours later was when all the madness started - the guests next door us were bumping their music at volume 80. so frustrating but what was really over the top was the guests above us. not sure if it was a case of too much to drink or what but the toilet flushed every 10 minutes for hours, there was a 4 o'clock in the morning shower, there was yelling & fighting & stomping...we could hear absolutely everything. i barley slept and awoke exhausted. so disappointing. i have never stayed at a hotel with such thin walls - to the point where i could hear conversations & people putting on their shoes. i called down to the front desk around 11 in the evening to see if they could move us - they could not. i complained the morning but supposedly there was nothing they could do but comp our movie rental which was as expensive as going to the theater. we will never stay there again - instead we will take our $$$ to The Nines next time we escape our children.

I stayed here for one night on business, after having stayed here once before about 5 years ago. I was given a "complimentary upgrade" to a Junior Suite. I do not have any status with this hotel and I believe the upgrade was because the hotel was fairly empty. My room on the 7th floor was very spacious with a sitting area and couch and two small bathrooms. Yes, it would have been preferable to have one larger bathroom but the building is old and there is probably little they can do to improve upon this. I have stayed in other hotels with small bathrooms and stand-alone sinks and I always wonder why they cannot make a small shelf below the sink so guests have somewhere to store toiletries.

The decor at Hotel Lucia is unique and welcoming. The bed is fantastic and there was a large flat screen TV in my room but alas, all analog channels . . . no HD. The mini bar in the room was tempting and not overpriced like most hotels. The hotel does have thick walls between the rooms but noise could be heard quite easily in the hallway and from toilets flushing above. There is a 24 hour parking garage across the street. I parked overnight for $17. I believe valet parking at the hotel is $30.

In all, I would highly recommend Hotel Lucia, particularly as a solo business traveler. It is unique and comfortable and the staff is very friendly.
