We were experimenting with carless travel so we took Amtrak to Portland. We'd
booked the hotel on hotwire for less than half the published rate and were
amazed to find it was only about 6 blocks from the train station and one block
from Pioneer Courthouse Square where we could catch trolleys for all over the
city, mostly free. The hotel is right downtown in the heart of the shopping and
theater district. Although we arrived at 11 AM the desk clerk allowed us to
check in right away and gave us a beautiful corner room with windows that
actually opened high above the city. The bed was amazingly comfortable and we
even checked the label on the pillows and ordered the same kind online when we
got home. And the hotel was the quietest we've ever stayed - we never heard the
elevator or ice machine or doors closing or conversation. The concierge was very
helpful in planning our outings to Forest Park, the Saturday Market, PSU, the
aerial tram, OMSI, and the Pearl District. He made dinner reservations for us
and helped get us started on our carless adventure. Two small improvements I'd
like to see: a refrigerator in the room and a mid afternoon snack in the lobby
when we were all walked out (there is a restaurant onsite but a plate of cookies
or apples would have really hit the spot). Although we usually prefer boutique
hotels, the Hilton was just perfect for this trip.

We stayed at the Hilton this past Monday night as a result of our flight being
cancelled and the Nines (where we had stayed for five nights prior) being
overbooked, and ended up paying more than our per nightly rate at the Nines so
was expecting a decent Hilton experience. What we got was the following...
This hotel is three stars at best (and that's just because the gym is decent for
a hotel even if the entire second floor smells like the pool). The blonde haired
girl at check in was the least friendly person I encountered on our trip to
Portland. She was just about to hand us our keys then must have realized that we
were two guys staying in a 1 King room and looked at me and simply said "are you
guys staying together?" When I replied that we were and gave her my name "in
case there was a problem with the keys" (the room was under my husband's name)
she immediately started typing on the computer again and Voila! we were given a
crappy room in the older building right next to the elevator. We had an
"e-upgrade" through Hilton Honors and asked about it and were told nothing was
available even though she never checked the computer to verify this.
As soon as we heard the announcement of "Fifth Floor" every time the elevator
doors opened 10 feet from our room I went to the front desk and asked to be
moved only to be told there were no rooms available. I have a hard time
believing the hotel was fully booked because we hardly saw anyone on the
property. Plus, there are not safes in the room nor are there any refrigerators
of any sort.
The only good thing about this property was James the Concierge who arranged for
an 3:45 am pickup to take us to the airport and called our room with all the
information. Even when we tried to check out of the hotel there was no one at
the front desk until we rang the bell three or four times.
The best thing about the Hilton in Portland was checking out and leaving the
memory of that one horrible night on this property behind. From now on I will
only stay at the Nines when travelling to Portland as it's a far superior
experience for a lot less money.

I was disappointed with this hotel. I had a clean room, but it had no fridge, it
was drafty, it was very noisy at night, and two nights in a row I was woken up
by unruly people screaming and yelling on the street. Also, wireless internet
service is not free and the service itself was inconsistent. The remote control
for the television was awful. They do not have a hotel shuttle either. The one
thing the hotel has going for it is its location in downtown Portland.

The first room to which I was assigned was on the same floor as the indoor pool.
The smell of strong chlorine wafted throughout the entire floor, so I asked to
be assigned another room on another floor, and my request was immediately
granted by the helpful front desk staff. Room was large, modern, nice bath.
Hotel lobby is large and elegant. Location could not be better...very near
Pioneer Park, and 1.5 blocks from the train stop from the airport. Stores
nearby, and two fast food restaurants across the street. It was a weekend, and
the streets were rather sparsely populated with people in downtown Portland, and
there was not a lot of city activity. I would highly recommend staying at this
hotel and will stay there again.

I have stayed at the Portland Hilton many times in the past, but never have I
had the exceptional service as during this week's trip. From the front desk,
through the fitness club, from the concierge who looked up many phone numbers,
to the front desk person who put us in touch with security. Security took us to
the top floor so that we could see the sun rise over Mt. Hood. Good brunch in
the dining room. Friendly, on-time room service. The hotel is green -- no phone
books in the room, but the concierge will gladly look up any number. And, you
can't beat the location for being central in Portland.
