The hotel is nice and served my needs, the best part was the location. It was a
couple blocks from the TriMet, steps from some amazing food carts, and not a far
walk to the Pearl or even Voodoo Doughnuts, i will be staying here again if i am
in Portland

A beautiful hotel and the actual staff provided great service! So you must be
wondering how I rated this hotel a 1 star. Because of a female working in the
accounting office and the General Manager who is a male with a French accent.
Now I have worked in the hotel industry for almost 20 years and know the system
and how it works. When I checked into the hotel I used my debit card for
incidentals. They put a $100.00 hold on my card. I fully expected this. We used
room service once and that was $28.00. That was authorized on my card as well.
No problem. Now when my 7 year old son and I checked out I paid cash for the
room service. I left with a zero balance. I went to the ATM to get some cash for
our return train trip home and my card was declined. The hotel had put a $400.00
hold on my card after I checked out. OK, left a message on the accounting
departments voice mail. No response. Now I check the bank account the next day
and another $123.00 hold has been put on the card. Now my son and I have NO
access to funds. I call the hotel and speak to a female accounting clerk. I
explain the situation and she advised me that is the way all hotels operate. I
advised her that that was not correct. I asked her to contact my bank and have
the holds released. She said I would need to fax that in writing. I advised her
I was on a train going back to PA. I asked to speak to the general manager who
was the most uncaring person I have ever talked with. He eventually hung up on
me. 3 days later the holds went away. Thanks to Amtrak for providing us with
great food during our trip when I explained the situation to them. We were in
Portland for medical treatment but the GM of the Governor did not care. He needs
a lesson in hospitality for sure. Stay away from this hotel please as the GM
does not care about his guests who are not rich!

I just ended my 3-week business trip. Portland, OR and The Governor Hotel were
my last stops! I booked this hotel because I got a GREAT deal $125 per night and
that included Valet parking, taxes, etc. I may have had a "Superior King" room
and it was out of this world! It was essentially a large suite. You walked into
a large living room/space w/a couch, chair, coffee table and desk. Then...walk
through French doors into a LARGE bedroom w/King bed. I had a great view (thanks
to the large windows) of the city/street. My room was VERY CLEAN!!!! (And I'm
very particular about cleanliness!) The staff was awesome and w/in 20 minutes of
my arrival, the front desk was calling me to see if everything was OK with my
room.
No free coffee, but Starbucks is off their lobby and they do have a restaurant
called Jake's. I didn't eat there, but within walking distance of the hotel
there are many great dining options. I'd recommend Henry's Tavern on 12th! The
hotel recommended it to me and it ended up being one of my favorites.
Because I was in Portland for work, having access to the internet was a MUST! I
didn't have any trouble w/their WiFi connection. Off the lobby they do have
computers and printers for guests use as well.
This hotel is historic, beautiful, clean and updated. Most importantly, the
price was right. I'd stay here again in a heartbeat and I'd highly recommend
this hotel to anyone. My only regret was that I didn't have an extra day to
simply enjoy my room!

The description for our Deluxe King room promises "unique and charming views of
downtown Portland." - in our case this amounted to the back of a roof parapet,
over the top of which we could just see a brick wall. Standing in one corner of
the room and standing on tiptoe I could then make out a skyscraper in the
distance.
Our heater didn't work, and the staff were unable to fix it so that it ran for
long - probably just as well as the gale of air from it was noisy enough to wake
me every time it kicked in. Fireplace is theoretically charming but emits no
heat and has some form of flue fan with noisy bearings; you couldn't hear the TV
over it at times.
My iPhone could find no trace of the promised free wi-fi in our room. The
bathroom had the dimmest lighting I can remember finding in a hotel, barely
adequate for shaving.
The room was in good decorative order and very well kept, the staff were
professional and helpful. Based on our experience and considering the cost I
cannot recommend The Governor.

The "Governor" like many hotels in any large city have various room types and
tariffs. This hotel is not only centrally located but an excellent choice
especially for leisure travellers. I Choose this hotel for clean and comfortable
accommodation appropriately priced and a touch of local history. Lastly,
regarding the "homeless" in Portland, all cities share this dilemma. You are far
less likely to encounter serious crime in Portland than Chicago, hands down!
