What guests are saying about the Hotel Monaco Portland

23 April 2012
Starting with their e-mail confirmation, and ending with a check-out that felt like leaving old friends, this hotel staff was perfect in every way. They suggested ways they could help plan things prior to our arrival, even did nice little extras, such as extra coffee packets & yoga kits in our room. We travel a LOT, and I have to say the Kimpton Monaco in Portland has truly hand picked the finest staff out there. We even made a "not so nice" comment on their recent interior finishes redo, and they were extremely good-natured about it. Not to worry -- we're architects, so we have specific taste in decor -- most people actually prefer the redo to the old, more business-like furnishings. Visit this wonderful hotel; you will be pleased you did. Happy architects from Seattle and niece from California.

Our trip was for pleasure (to attend a wedding) and I booked the Monaco due to: a) Trip Advisor ratings; & b) a very good price booked through my company's travel agency. This would otherwise be way out of my price range.
Booking was easy. I requested a crib in the room for our young child to which they said no problem. I also asked if there were two beds in the room in case the little guy wakes up crying and needs comfort by one of us in another bed. They said it didn't but they would upgrade us to a King-bed room with a pull out couch. This would turn out to be a key move.
Arrival was a little weird as we drove into the garage to check in. We knew we would not spend $35/night for our car to sleep in the garage so handing keys to the valet made me feel bad for the guy because I was not tipping just to check in.
Check-in was lovely. Very friendly service for our small family and a tired 21-month-old. There was a bellhop for our bags too which was nice, but once again, weird. We're not familiar with that kind of service. I didn't know how much to tip the guy afterwards though probably went a bit overboard ultimately.
First impression of the room was: WOW! Very large room with a large ornate bed and actually, the whole room was ornate. Maybe a little over the top ornate. We wanted a room, not a Las Vegas casino. But no complaints. Our little upgrade proved to be incredible as the bed was situated all the way near the window and was in a separable room from the "living room". Two doors slid together to block off the bedroom so we could retreat to watch TV or just stay up and read. Amazing layout!
There was no crib in the room when we arrived which was a bummer. Our little guy needed a nap. We called and they brought one that was too small, so we had to call again for a bigger one. This larger crib would end up slicing open my finger due to a painted over nail near the upper rim. I reported it and the Front Desk gave me a band aid.
Staff at the Monaco was super friendly! Every last one of them. And concierge was very helpful with local recommendations whether it be breakfast sandwiches or things for kids to do. The doormen were helpful in this regard too. Top rate folks.
Accommodations were fine. The toilet never flushed right during our entire stay. We called the Desk three separate times to which they said they were addressing it, but it was never really addressed. We were located on the hypo-allergenic floor which is not a factor for us, but was neat to know about.
On the positive side, a day or so after bringing the crib, they brought a complimentary stuffed puppy for my son and a complimentary bottle of delicious Malbec wine for my wife and I. Totally unexpected and over the top awesome on both counts!
The gym was so-so. Decent equipment, well maintained and clean but fairly limited in what one could do.
A nice feature we never got the chance to seize: beer & wine hour. Though the lobby always seemed to be packed for the event so I am somewhat glad we were not able to take advantage of it. My son loved the lobby and the little fireplace (with real fire). Beautiful furniture and decor.
Overall, this was a fantastic hotel. Not perfect, but holy-cow close. Comfortable, friendly, secure, spacious and clean. What more can one ask for?

Wow! Can't say enough about this hotel! From the welcoming emails the week leading up to my arrival, to the seriously comfortable bed, ultra cool decor, free, yes, free!!! Wifi, '(kimpton member) ridiculous assortment of goodies in the minibar (dangerous!) including gluten free. And did I mention the free coffee in their sitting room AND complimentary wine and beer tasting every evening at 5pm. FD and bell attentive. Just a pleasure, cant wait to return . And the location is a big plus... You will be leave with a smile:)

I just spent several days at one of the best hotels. From the very beginning until the end it was perfect. Beautiful lobby, wonderful people working there. They attend to your every need. Wine in the evening, coffee and tea in the a.m.. Dog friendly and there were several of them. The rooms are decorated in very different ways. Beautiful in every way. Want to go back again.

We had an excellent stay at the Monaco June last year, in one of the finest cities in US. It was my 3rd trip to PDX and my GF's first. (excellent enough for me to want to write this review after coming across my notes from that trip)
We had a cozy upper-story room with a view of the streets below-- it wasn't large, but comfortably sized with large windows. The bedding and upholstery was a little dated looking but fresh, clean, and bright (a recent email from Kimpton states that the rooms have been refreshed since). The room was very quiet-- we didn't hear our neighbours at all, and very little noise from the street (very rare for an urban hotel)-- Portlanders seem a quiet, respectful folk.
In this price range, I expect to be satisfied, but the Monaco staff went above and beyond. Little things like helpful advice from the desk about where to eat nearby (Portland is full of delicious food, do venture forth and explore), the garage valet not minding holding my rental car for 2 hours while we unloaded and settled in (no charge though it's not free parking) since I planned to return it. Major things like the hotel giving us a free bottle of wine (!) and cookies since I told them it was my GF's and my first trip together. Very classy, and very appreciated.
The lobby "Living Room" is comfortable, large, with a variety of different seating, and a fireplace-- we sat down here at nights when we both had computer work to do, rather than being closed up in our room. During the afternoon, there's a free wine tasting that allows for social mingling for the extroverts amongst you.
Food/drink at the hotel's restaurant ("Red Star") was very good, we had snacks or drinks here several times (happy hour specials are very affordable). Bacon-wrapped jalapenos (fiery hot, perfectly delicious) stand out in my memory, but we ate/drank here happily a half dozen times.
The hotel is only a few blocks from highway access, but Portland is a dream for carless transportation. Very walk able, very pedestrian safe, with small blocks and a lot of interesting sights. Within a few minutes of the hotel is an extensive waterfront park, various forms of transit, dozens of restaurants, several small parks, a public plaza, nightlife, etc. If you like to walk, you will love Portland.
Definitely join the Kimtpon In touch program (free) which offers various bennies like free Wi-Fi, occasional price promotions, etc.
Kimpton hotels in general are outstanding, and this one is no exception. Portland is a delightful, accessible city, very friendly, very walk able, and from the Monaco's location, you can easily get around downtown.
I travel frequently, and it's very rare that I'll recommend a hotel with any hesitation. This one such hotel. Highly recommended.
