What guests are saying about the Hotel Fifty Portland

We experienced excellent friendly service from the valet, front desk and dinning room. We loved the location near the waterfront. Once you enter the Hotel you'll find a new contemporary beautiful hotel. Compares closely with the upper end hotels in the downtown area with a much better price point. We'll be staying here again!

The whole staff of Hotel Fifty is incredibly friendly, the rooms are beautiful, and I've had nothing but great experiences staying there many times. Highly recommended!

We were a party of 3 staying in Portland for 2 nights with a pre-paid reservation. We arrived around 8 pm at the hotel and the receptionist was surprised to see that we were 3 and not 2. Then he said that there had been a problem with our room where a pipe had broken. He proposed (as the only possibility) to move us to an "equivalent" hotel a few minutes away. We checked on our phone about this alternative hotel and it resulted being a university campus in a seedy area. We refused to do move and asked to see the room with the broken pipe. The guy at the reception refused categorically. There clearly wasn't any room with a broken pipe and we were obviously overbooked without receiving an apology.
We started a very unpleasant discussion with one of the rudest receptionist we had ever met. In the end, when it was clear that we refused to leave to go somewhere else, he gave us a double room where they added a folding bed for the first night. Then the second night they moved us with a room with two double beds. Also, to be fair, they gave us some breakfast vouchers (but only after we asked for them). Still, we would have preferred not to have to fight to have a room.
The hotel is not bad but their practice of not honouring their booking (see other reviews, it seems that it happens quite regularly) makes your stay very random and expose you to a range of annoyance you shouldn't be dealing with when staying in an hotel. All in all it was a very bad experience which put us on the wrong foot to start exploring Portland. There are plenty of other hotels there, pick another one. It's better.

The hotel is located in a convenient location in downtown Portland, 1min walk from the “street-car” that brings you from the airport (~40min ride). The hotel looks very nice, new and clean yet it is much cheaper than the upper-end hotels near-by. It is right next to the river so you may want to ask for a room with a view (though it may cost more).
Breakfast is not included in the price. Notice that many of the dinning place around close relatively early (despite the fact it is downtown) so prepare yourself in advance. You can eat dinner at the hotel (kitchen is open till 22:00) but the verity is relatively disappointing.
One thing I did not like was that the heating was centrally controlled and the room was very cold in my opinion.

Nice staff, easy check-in. Smallish rooms, but it's a remodel hotel, so live with it. Great beds and linens. The bathroom was very nice with a tile and glass walk in shower. The bar is certainly adequate for meeting up and they made a serviceable old-fashioned. I would definitely stay here again and hope to soon!
