What guests are saying about the Courtyard Portland North Harbour

27 March 2012
Let me first start by saying that this is a Marriott Courtyard. Over the past few years there have been big changes in all Courtyards by Marriott from a service standpoint. they all seemed to have slipped a little. That being said, like all Marriott properties this is a clean and safe property near restaurants and shopping. Now for specifics for the property. My wife and I stay here every year on our annual visit through Oregon. It is our choice for our two nights in Portland. The reason is simple. It is centerally located and the view of the river is nice and for the most part its very quiet. There is also secure undergroud parking but one downside is spaces are very small. The location was confusing the first time , and if you are not familiar with the area , can be a little hard to find. On one of our visits there was a Softball Tounament that over took the hotel , but for the most part all of our visits have been quiet and relaxing. Over all we find it much more pleasant that staying downtown. We'll be coming back.

Let me start off by saying I am a Platinum member of Marriott and a owner of a Marriott Timeshare in South Lake Tahoe so I stay at a lot of Marriott locations. I think I have a good idea as to what each brand (Courtyard, Spring Hill, Fairfield, Residence Inn, Marriott's etc.) has to offer and how their properties should be. The Marriott Courtyard North Harbor is in a good location to the airport with a beautiful view of the Columbia River. The building its self looks very nice from the outside, great lobby and a very nice courtyard in the back overlooking the Columbia River. It also has underground parking. Where is is really lacking is the upkeep of the rooms, management and the people whom are in front of their customers. My comments are not from just one or two stays, I have stayed at this hotel five or six times over the last year or so. It's just very spotty in their customer relations and room upkeep. If you can get passed the low customer service and rooms that are in need of repair then its a good place to stay. I am not talking major damage to the rooms, its broken old tiles in the bathrooms, windows seals that are broken, carpet that is old and stained, beds, towel and sheet quality is poor, underground parking always has water puddles on the ground due to leaking pipes and/or bad drainage. The place just needs to good management and some money to fix and upgrade the place. Really to bad as the place has great potential to be a very very nice hotel with the location to the Columbia River.

This was my first stay at this hotel. The TV remote in my room would not work properly so I went to the front desk to get a replacement. That one did not work either. I asked about getting another and it never happened. Later the same evening I hit the exercise room and found yet another remote not working. The Precor treadmill needs to have the belt deck waxed as it makes a horrendous noise. Apparently the hotel housekeeping management is trying to save money by not using fabric softener. All of the towels had the texture of sandpaper - very uncomfortable. Some reading this review might think I am being a nitpicker but I travel fully half the calendar year and it's stuff like this that make me reconsider a hotel for a return stay. I just don't need it. A somewhat unique feature of the hotel is the under-hotel parking garage. Access to the hotel lobby and room floors can be gained from the garage. This is a really nice feature when it is raining like crazy and you have a backpack, computer bag and suitcase to drag into the place. The restaurant was very good and spacious. It opens at 6:00 am. On the exercise room, there are two treadmills, an elliptical and recumbent bike. Exercise mat also. There is a built in tv on the Life Fitness treadmill which by the way is a really nice unit. If you can deal with the stuff I mentioned here go for it.

OK, so it's just a Courtyard and what do I expect....Well, considering I'm a Marriott Rewards Elite Member, I don't expect to be put next to the elevator, on the noisiest side of the hotel. Actually quite a small room, and honestly it didn't seem to have been upgraded with the "new" bedding and pillows. The place was clean and efficient. And again, the hotel was quite noisy with the highway, a train line, and the river close by. Probably won't stay here again.

We stayed at this Courtyard quite by accident, after snow forced us from Crater Lake Lodge a day early. This is a clean, somewhat soulless place, but inexpensive, as it's 6 miles from downtown Portland (easily reached from I-5). Ask for discounts (AAA, AARP) and for about $100 you'll get a QQ room w/ a river view. We left early for a trip up the Columbia River Gorge, and this was an ideal starting point for that journey.
